Miami and Florida won't get an easy start to the college basketball season. Miami Hurricanes Hoping to Build on Last Season's Turnaround
What a difference one season made in Coral Gables. Miami went from winning seven games in 2024-25 to finishing 26-9 under first-year coach Jai Lucas. The Hurricanes also went 13-5 in ACC play and earned an NCAA Tournament victory before Purdue ended their season. That turnaround brought Miami back into the national conversation, but repeating it won't be straightforward. Three important players have departed, including Tre Donaldson, who averaged 16.4 points, and Ernest Udeh Jr., who led the team in rebounding.
Malik Reneau's return gives Lucas a familiar player to build around. Reneau averaged 18.9 points and 6.5 rebounds last season, while Shelton Henderson contributed 13.7 points as a freshman. Acaden Lewis arrives from Villanova to handle much of the playmaking, and Georgia transfer Somto Cyril adds size around the basket. Those newcomers face a demanding first assignment against Florida's experienced frontcourt. Miami has talent, but getting everyone comfortable in their new roles could take time.

Florida Gators Bringing Back a Familiar Frontcourt
Florida's last season ended earlier than expected. The Gators won 27 games and another SEC regular-season championship, only to lose to Iowa in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It was a disappointing finish for a program that had celebrated a national title in 2025. Todd Golden now begins another season with plenty of familiar faces. Florida has kept the players responsible for much of its work inside, which should help against a Miami team introducing a new point guard and center.
Thomas Haugh averaged 17.1 points and 6.1 rebounds last season and enters this year as the preseason SEC Player of the Year. Alex Condon is back after contributing 15.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists. Rueben Chinyelu completes a frontcourt that should be difficult to handle near the basket. Boogie Fland returns in the backcourt, with Denzel Aberdeen coming back to Florida after a season at Kentucky. The Gators have several ways to score without depending entirely on their outside shooting.

Key To The Game
Miami's biggest challenge will be dealing with Florida's size without allowing the Gators to dominate the glass. Reneau can score inside, but he'll need help from Cyril and Henderson against Haugh, Condon and Chinyelu. Florida also has the benefit of returning players who already know one another's tendencies. Lewis will have an important job directing Miami's offense in his first regular-season appearance for the Hurricanes. Turnovers and second-chance points could make the difference, especially with both teams still settling into a new season.
Miami Hurricanes vs Florida Gators Game Pick
- Florida Gators -4.5
Miami deserves attention after its remarkable turnaround, and Reneau gives the Hurricanes someone capable of scoring against a strong opponent. Florida, however, has more familiar pieces in important positions. Haugh and Condon can both contribute around the basket, while Chinyelu should make rebounding difficult for Miami. Lewis could eventually become an excellent addition for the Hurricanes, but facing the nation's top-ranked team immediately is a demanding assignment. I expect Miami to compete, particularly early, before Florida's experience inside begins to show. I'm taking the Gators.
Miami Hurricanes vs Florida Gators Over/Under Pick
- Under 161.5
Opening night brings plenty of uncertainty, especially with Miami replacing several important contributors. The Hurricanes have returning scorers in Reneau and Henderson, but Lewis is still learning to run this offense. Florida has a proven frontcourt, although that doesn't necessarily mean a fast game. The Gators can work through Haugh and Condon rather than rushing possessions. Miami will also need to spend considerable effort defending the paint and securing rebounds. I expect some uneven stretches from both offenses as the new season begins. Under is my pick.
