Dallas gets a good opportunity to steady itself Friday, but Utah is the kind of underdog that can briefly make a favorite regret taking control for granted. Keyonte George can score in bunches, and Lauri Markkanen makes a defense account for the perimeter even when he is playing at center. The trouble for the Jazz is what happens between those flashes. A six-game slide, an undermanned frontcourt and too many empty trips have made it hard to finish games. That combination gives the Mavericks a credible chance to win by more than the quoted six and a half.

Utah's Close Calls Are Turning Into Losses

George put up 39 points and nine assists Wednesday against New Orleans. Markkanen added 21 and 10 rebounds. Utah still walked away with a 120-113 overtime loss, unable to protect its advantage when the game tightened late. The Jazz shot 11-for-47 from beyond the arc. That is a punishing number when a team needs the outside shot to compensate for a thin group around the basket.

Jaren Jackson Jr. remains out with a knee injury, and Jusuf Nurkic is also sidelined with a foot problem. Utah does have other big bodies available, but it does not have the same defensive combinations it planned around. Markkanen can stretch the court and help the offense flow. Asking him to manage rim protection and physical rebounding for long stretches is a different challenge, especially opposite a team that will keep attacking the middle.

There is a path for Utah to stay competitive: George gets into the paint, Markkanen finds clean catch-and-shoot opportunities, and the supporting shooters make Dallas pay for collapsing too eagerly. But Friday's opponent has the playmakers to test that plan repeatedly.

Flagg and Irving Give Dallas More Than One Answer

The Mavericks are 4-4 after losing 112-111 at San Antonio. They were a possession away from taking that game, and there is little reason to treat the loss as a total unraveling. Cooper Flagg has quickly assumed a major share of the creation work, while Kyrie Irving offers the sort of late-clock precision that can rescue an otherwise clumsy half-court trip. Those two present different defensive problems. Flagg can drive through space and make the next pass; Irving doesn't need the same amount of room to generate a good look.

Dallas has injury concerns of its own. Dereck Lively II is out following foot surgery. Santi Aldama and Max Christie were listed probable entering Friday. An incomplete frontcourt could cost the Mavericks some second chances and defensive stability, particularly when Markkanen drags a big away from the paint.

Still, the favorable matchup is obvious. If Utah shades an extra defender toward Irving, Flagg can attack the next seam; if the Jazz sit back, Irving can settle into his preferred spots. Dallas doesn't need to win every isolation. It needs to keep forcing Utah to make the next rotation, then the one after that.

The Possessions Utah Cannot Afford to Waste

The Jazz have a hard time overcoming an empty trip followed by an offensive rebound allowed at the other end. Dallas will want to turn those sequences into its own rhythm. It should make George work for catches and keep a body near Markkanen without sending so much help that Utah gets uncontested corner shots.

If the Jazz shoot a reasonable percentage from three, the game could become awkward for the favorite. Dallas should not mistake Utah's losing streak for a guarantee of effortless stops. But a defense weakened around the rim tends to suffer most against teams that can create several driving angles, and that is where the matchup tilts.

Utah vs Dallas Odds and Line Movement

Public Friday listings have not told a single neat movement story. Dallas appeared around -7 or -7.5 on some boards, with the afternoon DraftKings Network reference showing -6.5 and Mavericks -113. The total stood at 225.5 in that observation; other shops carried 226.5. Different books are not a continuous price-history chart, so it would be misleading to announce a firm market-wide reversal.

The difference between -6.5 and -7.5 matters. One late basket could decide whether a comfortable Mavericks victory cashes the favorite ticket. I prefer the smaller number and would not blindly chase Dallas if it grows.

Best Bet: Dallas Mavericks -6.5 (-113)

George may well have another strong scoring night. Utah's current frontcourt, though, faces a long evening of decisions against Flagg and Irving, and the Jazz cannot keep relying on individual brilliance to cover for poor shooting and difficult defensive assignments. Dallas has more ways to manufacture the right matchup. At the quoted price, that should be enough for a second-half margin beyond two possessions.

Utah Jazz vs Dallas Mavericks Final Score Prediction

Predicted score: Dallas Mavericks 118, Utah Jazz 108. The Mavericks win by ten and cover -6.5.
