Columbus vs. Buffalo Game Preview

Two victories over Colorado and Dallas deserve attention, especially from a Columbus team that had struggled to string results together. But the Dallas win ended in a shootout Thursday, and now the Blue Jackets have to travel to Buffalo and play again. The market is asking for a different bet than a Columbus upset. At six and a half goals, I'm more interested in how much offense either side can manufacture over sixty minutes.
The Sabres have had an extra day to prepare after losing 2-1 to Ottawa on Wednesday. Buffalo enters this one at 7-5-3; Columbus is 7-7-0. Neither record tells you how the scoring will unfold, and the Sabres' home results haven't made them an especially convincing favorite. But rest and the way both teams generate offense make a lower-scoring game a reasonable starting point. The question is whether the price is worth paying.

A Road Back-to-Back With a Scoring Problem

Columbus has produced 2.57 goals per game through fourteen outings, with an average of 25.8 shots and a power play running at 16.2%. Those figures offer more useful context than its two recent wins. A club taking fewer than twenty-six shots most nights doesn't have much margin for poor finishing, even with Adam Fantilli, Matthew Knies and Kent Johnson capable of making something happen on an individual shift.
Adam Fantilli has enough skill around him to make this uncomfortable for Buffalo. Matthew Knies and Kent Johnson can get to dangerous areas, and Zach Werenski doesn't need many seconds to turn an innocent breakout into a scoring chance. The concern is the repeatability of those chances. Columbus just worked through a tight game in Dallas, where one goal wasn't enough to win in regulation. An extra night of skating won't improve a power play that has been operating at 16.2%.
The Sabres' penalty kill is the obvious objection to the under. It has succeeded on fewer than seven of every ten opposing power plays. A few sloppy penalties could send this total in the wrong direction quickly. But Columbus has its own special-teams problem, with a man advantage converting only 16.2%. I won't pretend one weakness simply cancels the other; I will say that betting on a power-play explosion takes more faith than these two clubs' recent conversion rates warrant.

Buffalo Has Reasons to Control the Game, Not Run Up the Score

Buffalo is averaging 2.93 goals on 27.9 shots, and its 16.3% power play is scarcely more productive than Columbus's. Tage Thompson remains the forward who can alter the complexion of a game with one release. Zach Benson has been producing, while Jack Quinn and Josh Norris give the Sabres other ways to finish. That is different from saying Buffalo has been a relentless attacking team over fifteen games.
Buffalo should be able to keep the puck in the offensive zone for stretches, particularly if Columbus runs short on energy late. That does not automatically produce a four- or five-goal night. The Sabres average fewer than three goals, and their power play hasn't offered much relief when five-on-five finishing dries up. A 3-2 Buffalo win would suit the game state: the home side controls territory, Columbus has moments of pressure, but neither offense takes over. The -170 Buffalo moneyline asks for more certainty about the winner than I want to pay for.
Jiri Kulich is listed to return, and Conor Timmins is expected to make his season debut. Those are useful additions, although returning players do not always settle in immediately. Buffalo is still missing Alex Lyon and Matt Grzelcyk, among others. Columbus remains without Isac Lundestrom. Neither lineup is an excuse to manufacture a big offensive projection from thin air.

The Goaltending Objection

The starting-goalie projection is hardly a perfect foundation for an under. Jet Greaves is listed for Columbus after Cam Talbot faced Dallas, with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen opposite him. Their early-season save percentages sit around .883 and .874. Those numbers are a real reason to limit confidence. I'm backing modest shot creation and a difficult scheduling spot more than I'm relying on a spectacular performance in either crease.

NHL Odds and Line Movement

DraftKings' published Friday board put Buffalo at -170 and Columbus at +142, with the total sitting at 6.5. Under 6.5 was -118, against -102 on the over. Other moneyline boards have shaded the home favorite a little more heavily. The notable feature is that Buffalo's win price demands a firm opinion about which team takes two points, while the total asks a different, more manageable question.
Under 6.5 at -118 demands a win rate of about 54.1% just to break even. Six total goals still cash; seven do not. Neither team's scoring average is a ready-made probability model, and a short-handed goal or a couple of weak saves can change the math in a hurry. For me, the case is the combination of Columbus's road back-to-back, its limited shot volume and two struggling power plays.

Columbus vs. Buffalo Best Bet and Prediction

I don't need to call Buffalo a bargain to expect it to win. The more defensible position is that Columbus struggles to sustain offense after Thursday's workload and that the Sabres don't need to chase a shootout to take advantage. The goalie matchup makes this a modest lean rather than a heavy play.
Best Bet: Under 6.5 total goals (-118 at DraftKings in Friday's published market, or better). This depends on the quoted total and pregame goaltending holding up. Score Prediction: Buffalo Sabres 3, Columbus Blue Jackets 2.
